So here we are again, another year, another age. 2024 the Year of the Green Dragon with the Grey Rabbit closing on the maximum of the Age of Kali and the Dragon warming up the in between time before the pendulum swings, beginning its journey into the next age back the other way. Last time we saw Dragon was 2012 which was the end of the Mayan calendar. SO this old chestnut, hey!
There has been within our contemporary mind, a bit of a love hate relationship with the Dragon. For some the Dragon is mythical, allegorical; for others part of our missing link with life evolution on this planet. There has been much about this image of the Dragon which has had either positive PR or negative PR. For some a harbinger of divinity and heavenly communication for others one of the animals of the apocalypse. –be all this as it may, I have never once heard a person born in this year, when first told 'they are born in the dragon year', it is always a resounding 'Yes!'. Never once has a Dragon native rejected the idea, they love it.
So, the Dragon is polarising, trigger jealousy and competitiveness in the other not so flashy animals natives and a Dragon may spark a sense of inadequacy to the more humble breeds of the cycle. As if all things are suddenly not as equal as a 'circle' seems to at first imply. I mean the Tiger was a bit of a speed bump to golden ideals of equality and everyone sharing the pastures but now there is a Dragon! Huge to some. Dragon can bring out the best or the worst of us.
This is part of the mystery Dragon presents to our human condition; is duality as simple as black and white first implies? Are all things in Nature symmetrical? or is asymmetrical the symmetry of Nature? Dragon makes us look at our core human nature; our beliefs, our practices, ideological structure, generational patterns of behaviour and how we view ourselves, each other and the world. Are we addicted to the human condition, the human nature. We see our reflection our decisions play out on the world stage which is the physical manifestation of our fundamental structure inner and outer. Dragon presents a mystery to face, our true animal nature in all its glory and all it's darkest vices and compliance to something other than our nature. The simplicity of Dragon is complex and this is just a taster.
As an Earth energy the Dragon is the changing pressures within all elements, water, metal, earth, fire, wood. We will feel it in the rumbles of the Earth, the oceans, the waterways, the air we breathe and the very winds of change in a real sense. It can be a very 'Earth changes' time. So things may be a troubling time on the Earth for some or many. The Chinese, in my thinking, have retained an element of a more ancient symbology of the Dragon as an energy, influence if you like; within and outward.
It is the manifestation of when the Earth talks to the atmosphere. Dragon doesn't spring changes on us or surprise us with destructive forces, that's a little more like Tiger. The Dragon's body contains the story of what is happening in the environment for us to see, if we have eyes to see it. The responses of nature; like the flight of birds, the rising of mists and the formation of clouds, to name a few; for those with eyes to see. Dragon's very appearance is to announce the potential of what heaven and Earth have in mind. What is done with that information is up to us.
On that note, one of the things I'm grateful for, is the interest and enthusiasm of my friends and family over the years. In my little meanderings through the fascinating world of us through the eyes of the ancient Asian astronomer. This has helped form a pot of resources in the foundational development of in the understanding of energy and flow which seems to be in all things. It is such a pleasure to put together the Chinese Astrology for each year. This year has been so energising and focusing to touch, making the process very quick and natural. This is just for fun and I hope you enjoy a little giggle here and there. As usual, I could have kept going, writing on and on for each Animal, especially for some.
Dragon brings us our heart's desire, like the knights of old, be sure your heart and what it desires. Be true to you in all things, be true to those you love, for there is much joy to be embraced, big and little. And I guess this is the mantra for when facing a Dragon show no fear... because it contains and the embodiment of all you dream, wish, pray for including fear so fear nothing, it is not new to you.
We start the zodiac at the 'first' animal, and really if you can grab the essence of Rat, being the first, Rat sums up the general energy of the year for everyone. Maybe because this is a Wood year and Rat is peak Water, if we can all do things as easily and clearly as Rat by; focusing on small things that mean big things in the future, with health in mind. We would all be on the right track.
This year I've added a little of the numerology, as each element relates to a number and each year of course has an end number, for example; 2024 ends with a four. They can take a project from point A to B; they have the agility of mind and body to meet any change of direction on the path. Witty, skilled and a fast learner, they can see situations before others and quickly apply a result. Their mind is as agile as their body. They can have a short attention span and can only continue if they view the situation as a game. If Monkey can quieten the monkey mind, stop tail chasing and use their brilliant ideas wisely they can be a master of all.
Well Monkey, you’re in the A-list! Dragon unfetters any constrains, frees worry and throws caution to the wind. Yee Hah! Who’da thought life could be like this? Flash, dash and panache are all right up Monkey’s alley and there is no one to stop it. Dogs are a natural provider, they are the coming of winter, and they constantly ask ‘Who is responsible?’ Dog is a hard worker, the one to be relied upon when the cause seems lost. Dog can work well in a team and will work hard to achieve success. Given to emotional outbursts and emotional overwhelm, Dog sometimes is unable control how he feels and reason can go out the window. The champion of the underdog; the guardian of fairness and equality for all people, Dog sometimes cannot see beyond the pressures given by others. Loyal, compassionate, and friendly, one who will always stand beside you.
Hmm something about all those fireworks that sets Dog’s hair on end. Dragon’s optimism grates Dog’s pessimism radar into overdrive. ‘No, things can’t be this good!'; 'What, another overblown idea!’. Dog may feel disgruntled as the world seems to vortex down the gurgler. Trust in the golden times. Dragon’s going to have some harebrained ideas flying around that will set Dog digging an enclave for loved ones; tricked out with 24hr security and secret passwords. Green Dragon of all the dragons lends a taste of contentment to Dog. Is almost feels like a warm shaft of sunlight warming the fibers of the coat, just for a moment. Not the time to talk to the bank manger this year not the year to indulge in get rich quick or money generating ideas especially for those in Year ending with ‘0’. Try finding the green in nature, take time out, away from the hustle and bustle to reconnect with the power and majesty of Nature.
Dog, the most affectionate of us all; this is the year you can let go a little cynicism and allow a little golden sunlight to warm the openness of the heart. Try allowing music to calm the waves of overwhelm, let your body move to the rhythm as away to let emotion out in a positive way, or even allow your voice to sing out loud with emotion to nobody in particular. Dogs don't sweat (actual dogs that is) so energetic movement and loud deep body singing can shift energy in a positive way.
Dragon has some excellent advice,(allow optimism, follow the sense of joy, let the tail wag a little); don’t wait all year to heed it; you can find a glimmer of goodness. Allow others the responsibility of the lead, be responsible for themselves and listen to the experience of others no matter how harebrained it seems without the need to do anything.
Take time to research your elders, the grandparents. Are there patterns to change? Are there traditions to embrace about who you are? There is something to learn here. 2023 Pig in Green Dragon

Dragon tip: Good times roll on! Piggy don’t be nervous continue your truffle stacking though find time to have a social whirl. Excellent time to prepare for future. Seek and you will find.
The Pig is the maker of rest and peace understands the need for tranquility in life and appreciates the need to celebrate the milestones. Pig is the peace, tranquility, butterflies and blossom petals. Highly sensitive the pig will seek sensitivity ‘down-time’ and will make home a haven. Always a perfectionist but willing to make compromises so everyone can win, Pig is devoted to career and will incorporate personal interests with work. Strong minded almost to the extreme especially if they are unable to achieve their goals. Pig is creative and will indulge in all the fine things of life.
Who better to appreciate a year of plenty then our beloved Pig! Up to the hocks is celebration and good will. Time to reconnect with the social scene, look for things that can put you into regenerating the friend circle. As you would expect from the loud rambunctious Dragon, things will be hectic and busy…good though keep stacking away the nest egg. Ensure you allocate down time because we know you will dance till dawn while the music still plays but for all your robust good cheer, your gentle constitution could handle a bit of an occasional lie down. TLC at regular intervals is the way to pace Piggy through this party season.
Green Dragon has started a conga line and Piggy is high kicking with their buddy, if by the middle of the year Pig finds the year too much, too needy, too demanding on energy and time; then take a break, this year you can pick it all up again after your restorative retreat. Especially for our more sensitive those in years ending in ‘5’. Once you notice a drop in even temperedness time to step away.
This is time for Pig to really take stock of your accomplishments…and there are many, and give yourself a good round of applause. Just accept that others rely on their Pig friend to be the accomplished ‘go-to’ person for their experience, advice and opinion. Try not to get sucked into overwhelm of the energy of the Dragon year, pretty full on, it will wash by, let your optimistic nature float you to safety. Your fears are ungrounded, just stick to the plan and enjoy some social good times. Truffles to snuffle.
Phew! What a year! I thoroughly enjoy putting this together, it makes me consciously tap in to look into the threads of human conscious at this time.
