Here we are in 2026, the year of the Red Horse, which begins on February 17th. As I stand at the transition from the Snake to the Horse, I find myself anticipating the date. I sense the Snake's determined presence and need to stay close to feel the Horse's rhythm. The pounding of its hooves on the fabric of the cosmos and the veils of Nature is rapid and constant: ba dum, ba dum, ba dum. The essence, which was concealed in the allure of the Blue Snake, emerges as the Red Horse bursts forth in a blaze of colour and light. Fire ignites from the friction of the coils that held spirit, confined will, and cast a dark shadow on the eternal lamp. We couldn't ask for a better symbol to inspire optimism, transform and dispel illusion, and reveal clarity in the light of eternal divine power.

The Year of the Red Horse: A Time for Transformation
The Horse is the sixth animal of the yearly cycle of the Chinese zodiac, sitting at the midpoint of the 12-year cycle. This year represents the culmination of the previous six years. It reflects what we have done and what experiences and actions we carry into the latter half of the cycle. The midpoint of the cycle of elements is Fire. The year 2026 is the midpoint of the midpoint—the culmination of the culmination. The fire horse, double fire. Sounds quite dramatic, and that is as it can be. It can be the lightest of the light, the quickest of the quick, and the divine-est of the divine. Saddle up! Forward ho!
The Horse is the Celestial Horse, the conveyer of divine beings around the heavens. Quan Yin, for example, employed the White Horse as her main transport. The Horse is the evolution of the Dragon on Earth. It is the fully mature, healthy tree, upright, full of leaves, and basking in the midday sun. It represents a moment of change from morning to afternoon, when all is open, just before the shift. The cosmic flow of energy from the Earth changes to the cosmic flow into the Earth. The truth lies in the gap in the beat of the heart, the moment of pause between the outflow and inflow of breath. Spirit interacts with matter, and matter embodies spirit.
The Legendary Red Horse: A Symbol of Strength and Resilience
The Red Horse is represented in the legendary horses of Uzbekistan, known as The Heavenly Horses or the blood-sweating horses. These horses were fought over, awarded as prizes, and given as gifts to Emperors, heroes, and warlords. They are renowned for their speed and endurance, with a golden metallic sheen to their coats. With a golden sheen flecked with red, the Akhal-Teke horses became part of myth and legend, remaining the oldest purebred horses still in existence. The Red Horse, the Fire Horse, symbolizes war, alliance, and positive force. However, we must remember how it all concluded—this intense and passionate connection with this earthly embodiment of divinity. In the end, the Horse made its choice.
China's light faded a little when the legendary 'Red Hare,' the red horse of the Eastern Han, chose to starve itself to death. After a life filled with remarkable and courageous acts alongside a rider of true heart and heroism, Red Hare was passed from emperor to warlord to general to warlord to governor as a trophy and token of compliance. This legendary horse, known for its heroic feats, was acquired through war, betrayal, intrigue, and corruption until Red Hare decided to end the arrogance by taking its own life. Or so the legend tells. What will we choose in this year 2026, the Fire Horse, the red horse of legend?
Fire as a Catalyst for Complete Change and Alchemy

Fire is the energy known as Shen, synonymous with 'spirit.' In Western Medieval times, when a saint, prophet, or holy person experienced a 'spiritual download' or was in spirit, they were often portrayed with flames descending onto their shoulders from heaven. Shen is the dwelling place of our conscious nature. The concept of spirit varies across cultures. In Western culture, spirit is perceived as a distinct potential entity. In contrast, the Chinese tradition does not view spirit as separate. However, if examined closely, traces of this perception can still be found in Western philosophy, suggesting that cultural beliefs may have been more aligned at some point in history.
Fire is an eternal flame, symbolizing the Spirit or the action of a higher Will. It emerges from the unseen, like a match struck in darkness, and can quickly engulf you, much like the prevailing presence of Air. This connection is why the Wood element is associated with the Air element in the Western elemental cycle. For Spirit to effect change on the earthly plane, it must interact with and embody a resource. As you breathe, your heart beats. The first spark is the heartbeat, marking our transition from being sustained in warm spiritual fluid to the cool movement of Air. This transformation is inexplicable, the greatest alchemical change that allows our existence. As we exist, Spirit also embodies within us, igniting us to create, destroy, or live. Spirit depends on air to spread, to communicate, to elevate us, to express words, impressions, and fame. Spirit manifests in carbon as your earthly form. You generate Shen when you circulate Chi.
The double fire of the Red Horse year amplifies the brightness and intensity that higher will can impact the human experience. Expect more dramatic fiery outbursts, more intense exchanges, and remarkable optimism amidst chaos. This is the year to truly discover who, what, and where takes center stage in your life.
Fire needs to spread and utilize resources to ensure its survival. The Horse, a symbol of fire, will see the need for leaders and people of influence to inspire others to believe their story. The Horse is part of the triad that loves to 'stir the possum stew.' The Horse feels it needs to activate you, to stimulate and excite you to a passion. It relies on adding pressure to your workload, emotional load, and very life until you decide to surrender to its pressure. When the Red Horse is unbalanced, it asks for sacrifice; it calls for blood to fuel change. Be sure, you can change without it.

The Horse: Carrier of Flame, Spirit, and Heartfelt Focus
The Horse symbolizes the eternal flame and celestial fire, embodying the divine spark and an unyielding spirit. This is the kind of energy you want to bring into any venture you pursue. Fire represents the light and warmth of the midday sun, the height of summer. This year focuses on what you do, why you do it, and how you can improve, find more joy, and act with efficiency.
The Horse is the essence, the central point, the central channel. In a fairytale, when a hero is needed who is pure of heart, this is how we show up in the reflection of what we embody in our beliefs. You might enter a situation with noble intentions, but the true challenge lies in being part of it. This is more than having the idea of what you want to be or how you would like it to go; this is about making it happen. Be courageous, stay true to your heart, and those you accompany on the journey. The aim is to emerge from the situation with your body, mind, and soul intact, along with all those you love. Acting with fair judgment and open evaluation will be most beneficial. What kind of celestial being will you create this year to ride into the next cycle? Are you a star shining with magnificent light and generous warmth? You will find your path by following your heart.
If you find yourself dreaming under the influence of the last year, the Snake's perfume, the Horse will shatter the illusion and pull you back to reality. This experience might feel like a rebirth, a renewal, or a resurrection. Like the mythical Unicorn, it's change in its purest form. Are you prepared to view life from this perspective? Adjusting to this new way might take some time. In the year of the Fire Horse, change can feel like a moment of death followed by a complete renewal, transforming you as if your old self never existed—almost like stepping into a different version of yourself, a new reality. The changes around and within you will transform you. Things you were 'SURE' of might not be so certain anymore.
Things may feel as if everything is converging to break you; to bend you to a will other than what you truly feel or believe. The Horse is really just testing you, testing how far your boundaries are, and how much pressure you can take. If you get more, ask for more, then have more. Be careful what you wish for; this is the time to be true, not to wish and hope. The Horse is honing your heart, crafting your resolve in the fires of the crucible of change. It tests how long you can stay true to yourself and the heart of the matter—what matters most. If you are under enough pressure, will you do what the leader wants?
Red Horse, well, let's face it, contains the embodiment of the mad alchemist. "What happens if we put more on this fire here? What happens if we stick our fingers into this situation over there? Will this blow up if we give it a good shake?" "Hey you there, yes, you; just walk into the fire here. Yes, the fire, it looks okay; just give it a go. Ooh, that's what happens. Was that one or two 'Ow!'s? And just if you stick your fingers into that over there; oh lovely, that looks a real mess. Might take a bit to get it off; you better clean up. Oh, and here, hold this; now give it a good shake. Explode?! No, I don't think it will explode. Oh, it does explode! Wow, amazing, Ka-boom. Lovely, same time tomorrow then."

The Red Horse can self-destruct this way; however, it is more likely to encourage others who seem attracted or sucked into the madness. The Red Horse may not have the ability to preserve life, not even its own. When the Red Horse has worked through its madness, its angers, and bonfires of the heart, we are left with warm embers, positive soothing kindness, calm creative forces, and a potent healing balm that contains the building blocks to rebuild. Utilize experience, maturity, and deft skilled actions that create empires and civilizations. Maintain your hope and optimism, focus your heart, and do things that make your heart sing. Act deftly and with efficient expenditure of energy. If you find yourself going through the madness, hold tight, stay true to your heart path, and know that like any fire, this too shall pass.
This is the year of action. If you feel you are still firmly wrapped in the coils of control and conflict from the Snake, then do what you need to do to step aside. The Horse sees no issue in stopping its headlong, full-pelt run. Coming to a sudden stop is a Horse's way to throw a rider it doesn't want on its back. The disconnected rider, gouging at the Horse's flanks with the spurs of illogical, irreverent, and inexperienced ideas. The Horse's logic is (illogically) governed by intuition. If it doesn't feel right, then it ain't right, and the Horse expects you to do something to change it. Or find yourself thrown off, discarded along with leaders who are 'lost to power.' If there is no up or down, then if what was real isn't real, then what is? You can stop at any time; you don't need to go through with it. There is nothing that 'should be.' Only the ba dum, ba dum, ba dum—the constant rhythm of life itself: breathe in, breathe out.
Riding the Celestial Red Horse

Who do you love? What is love? Is it really a heart thing? Maybe it is more a lust thing, or is it a co-dependent thing? Is love an energy, a power, or a thing? The Red Horse asks us to ask questions about this (the Horse asks many questions) of ourselves. Take a deep dive into love: what is it, and how does it feel? Then take your answers and place them beside your heart. Do they align? Is this the higher will, or is it the smaller will? Is this immature? Is this unbalanced? Look, ask, and know the answers. It is about what we harness, the kind of horse we are riding, and what we go to war over. It is about what we hone our beliefs on and where our life sparks from and how we live it. Be surprised where it takes you and discover the rider you are on your celestial horse in the pathways of the cosmos. May this be the love you are looking for.
The marriage of two things moving in alignment is certainly a thing in a Red Horse year.
If meditation is your go-to retreat, your central force of realignment, the Horse wants you to do something with that. Include prayer, include activity in relation to your meditation intention. Dance your aggression, dance your joy, walk in nature, chew the spiritual fat, and get a sense of your environment. There is no point wishing and hoping, the Horse says; get on with asking, in a respectful way, for what you want. If you do all this spiritual practice but don't apply your senses as a conduit for higher will, then you are wasting the Horse's time, and it will leave. The world will seem darker. Plus, find meditation in the food you eat; allow each mouthful to be a journey of senses. Care for your heart health; use breath to build the fires of the heart to cleanse the pathway of overgrowth. Find the active in non-activity; let go of the passive, and be open in actively seeking the peace you are looking for. If you believe in one side or the other, right or wrong, then you are welcome to the trip to madness. There are many ways to ride a horse; seek the path of the heart.

If you're planning a 12-month spiritual journey through the Andes, this is the year to do it. Regardless of the circumstances, this is the year where actions embody prayer. It's the year to explore your romantic notions of love, white picket fences, and discovering the Holy Grail. This is also the year of dubious tricksters and charismatic smooth talkers. If you fall for illusions, you might find yourself living in a movie scene instead of reality. Be cautious of what appears to be your dream. If it is something you didn't actively work towards, weren't contracted to perform the deed, or weren't part of the team involved in creating it, then it appears to be your dream; it truly is too good to be true. The Horse will focus on true actions, true grit, and true involvement. The Horse will honour you; your actions and how they affect those around you will bring fame or infamy. You choose the saddlebag you carry your tools in.
Dynamics of Rider and Horse
The horse, while it carries the flame, is itself the flame and embodies it. We often forget that the rider is the external connection to the horse. The horse represents how we interact with one another. Are our interactions symbiotic, synergistic, or parasitic? The horse permits us to ride with it, and the way you ride reflects the experience you have. Whether it leads to fame or infamy, the horse will reveal it swiftly. If you believe it's about taming or controlling the energy around you, the horse will quietly or suddenly withdraw and move in the opposite direction. This is about cooperation, collaboration, and empathy.
As a horse can traverse terrain and pick the best path, so can you when you follow your heart's direction. The compass sits at the midpoint, your true direction. In the chaos of the situation, breathe, feel into the beat of your heart, and feel drawn to the direction within. If you are fortunate enough to step into the stirrup of the celestial Horse, be sure of your belief and the attitude you bring to the charge at life—a creative or destructive power we all contain within us. Are you a collaborator of the heart, or are you here to control? How do we shape our path? How do we hold the stardust in our earthly form? Do you interact from a position of leadership or totalitarian control? You will either create from your choices or destruct; you will encourage growth, or you will turn all to ash.
The Red Horse: Generosity with the Celestial Gift

The Red Horse embodies generosity of spirit and grace. This is the year to reveal how your heart sits when you are gifting to others. Do you see your gift as a way of control? Is the gift receiver now in your debt upon accepting your gift? Are you truly being generous? When you find yourself in the position of having the deciding vote or being the decision-maker that influences others, are you looking at those turning their gaze, open to offer their support, asking for others to be generous to your cause? Are you seeing your position as above and therefore the important position? Are you taking without giving? Are you delivering by stepping on the hearts and bodies of others? Are you climbing the wall on the dead bodies of obstacles? Do you see yourself as the gift? It is your heart and your actions that determine if the pure radiant energy of the Sun will nourish, transform, warm, or burn. Find love and know your gift.
The Horse, sitting at the point of change, relays information to the rider from the environment around it. If the rider is listening to the subtle changes, the difference in the gait, the body language, then together they have the best opportunity to respond rather than react. The rider offers guidance to the Horse—our burning passions, our alchemical emotions. The self-mastery of the rider brings to the Horse wisdom, experience, and insight with a wider vision. A companionship with the potential of a finely honed wrought object of use or misuse. The more the rider maintains self-mastery, the more the Red Horse is open to joy and being guided beyond being a weapon of mass destruction to being a companion of creativity.
Master your head, maintain your heart, and your feet shall find the path home.
